The space between shelves is by personal choice. The reviews suggest that the product is easy to assemble and reasonably sturdy. Most customers use it for small spaces and it works well for storing smaller items. The shelves are built so that items don't fall off and can hold many items or varied sizes. The only downside mentioned is that the instructions are poorly written and parts were sent that had nothing to do with assembling the rack.
