The Roland HandSonic HPD-20 is a popular electronic instrument with over 100 preset kits to create and customise, as well as the option to upload custom .wav files, and swap and assign preset pads to other instruments and sounds. Sensitivity settings can be adjusted to avoid hard hits, and there is a headphone jack provided. It can be used as a midi controller with a DAW such as Ableton, and changing MIDI mappings to choose which note each pad triggers is an easy process. A record feature for a performance and a metronome option for loop playback of the recording are included. A realtime looper is not included, it only includes "Quick Record". While the Roland product support stated that the learning curve is that of any electronic instrument, there are some downsides. One review mentioned that even with the purchase of the KD7 High hat and FD-8 bass pedal-trigger, the BT-1 trigger cannot be used simultaneously for the ride cymbal. Additionally, fast tapping or snare rolls on the same pad are not as accurate. Furthermore, the product is expensive and may not be worth the price for some users.
